The Journey - SGA fic

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 9:44 AM
The Journey, a story co-written with [info]jayne_perry, is now (finally!!) finished! I'm dedicating it to my good friend [info]greyias, who, after having read a small snippet around two years ago, has been waiting patiently for the rest of it!! She did see a few other snippets earlier this year and proved invaluable in working out how to do flashbacks, and also allowed me to use a couple of paragraphs she rewrote to help me deal with Rodney in the first scene of Part Four - but still, she's not seen the whole story yet! As it's her birthday today, it seems right to post it now - so Happy birthday, greyias, and hope you enjoy the fic you've been waiting so patiently for!!

I did this back in 2007. Figured it was time to update the list.

Which shows have you seen? )

Yuletide!

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 6:22 PM
Eee! Yuletide! I...kinda want to write two of my recipient's prompts (and their third is for a canon I keep meaning to watch and haven't yet).
EEEEEEE
Oh, man, now I'm really excited to see what whoever my author is writes for me.

Okay. Time to make dinner. And then it's a Slings and Arrows date with the roommate to finish Macbeth

Yuletide!

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 4:02 PM
I've got my Yuletide assignment! And I think I'm somewhere between "Oh wow, this could be so much fun!" and "Oh shit." Which I understand is the normal response to Yuletide. *g* And now, my Yule letter.

Dear Author Who Is Writing For Me:

If you are reading this, thank you so much for writing a story for me! :)

The important thing to know about me is .. I'm fairly easy to please. I will probably be thrilled with any story you write for me. Basically, anything from an intricately plotted mystery to 1000 words of goofy banter is going to make me happy. The information below (as well as my rather detailed requests) is merely to give you a general idea of my reading preferences, not to be taken as a set of absolute guidelines. And you don't have to work in every character that I requested in each of my fandoms; I just picked the characters that I most wanted to see interact, but if you have an idea that only involves one of them, go for it!

General information on the kinds of stories that I like (kind of long!) )

I got so detailed with my requests that I don't think I have a whole lot else to say about my individual fandoms, but I'll repeat my requests here for your convenience; I've seen other people doing that and it seems like a good idea. Please don't feel too confined by my detailed requests -- I just wanted to make sure that you had something solid to work with in each of my fandoms. And like I said above, definitely don't feel like you have to work in every single character I requested if it doesn't fit the story.

Well, I'm still looking for This One )But I am having trouble navigating my way through Psychfic, (all I can seem to find are Shawn/Jules and I don't want to read any of those), so I was wondering if anyone could recomend some good Shassie fics from there.

I like Multi-chap but one-shots are fine too. I could do with a could gen fics, just no Shules, please.

Thanx in advance for the recs and help.

1) I've been having trouble keeping up with comments, so if I haven't responded to you, it's not that I didn't appreciate your comment. I'm just, well, fantastically busy.

2) Yesterday I had Ark of Truth on while I was writing up some homework (converting from scratch paper to proper write-up). I haven't watched it since I started this graduate program and started learning a lot about geology and earth science and stuff. This time, when Teal'c did his Massive Ridiculous Walk Of Awesome Across The Mountains instead of noticing how pretty it was and how determined Teal'c was, I started squeeing at the mountains and "that's a really cool gnama" and "oh, look at that weathering pattern" and "man I'd love to map out that hydrologic profile." So, in case this wasn't clear, I Am A Dork.

3) Farscape is being reissued on dvd, which is exciting since it hasn't been available on dvd since I started watching. Even more exciting? deepdiscountdvd has the complete series for $75

4) I've had a few small coding assignments recently, which has reminded me how much I like coding when I'm in the right frame of mind. Which has reminded me that I really would like to sit down and learn to help out with dreamwidth someday. I'm hoping after this semester I might have some time to do so.

5) Speaking of female-heavy open source projects on the web, the archive of our own is now in open beta so you can request invites to get an account. I got one when geocities shut down and haven't had time to start uploading and explore, though I plan to over winter break. That account means I do have one invite code, so talk to me if you'd like it. My only caveat is that, since codes are sparse right now, I'd really prefer you only ask if you really think you're going to use it.

6) I haven't forgotten all those "personal canon" and whatnot prompts I asked for a few weeks ago. Also, Yuletide assignments should come out soon (oh, god, I hope I wasn't crazy to sign up). And yesterday/today I've felt revitalized about three different WiPs languishing on my hard drive. And that vid I was talking about? Is essentially done, aside from two clips I want to fiddle with and any polishing (um, theoretically you can get betas for vids?) and, well, then [info]ultranos_fic and I have to finish writing the darn story because I can't share it yet as it will both spoil the story and be confusing without knowing it. But, well, this vidding thing? I can see how it gets addictive. And I'm really pleased with some of what I did.

Chapter 1

The War Against Bugs, and Other Random Things

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 11:53 AM
Well...it's been an interesting week. lol We've spent most of it fighting off head lice. *sigh* The girls brought it home from school and the past week we've been treating, doing laundry, bagging stuff up, etc etc etc. The washer and dryer have gotten quite the workout this week.

I think we've finally turned a corner and are starting to get the upper hand. PRAISE GOD! I will say this has been a horrible chore. lol I never had them as a kid, so it was also completely overwhelming at first. But I took the girls to their physician and they were given a prescription-strength lice-killer that we treated them with. And today, after having them sleep with shower caps on to try to limit the spread of the things, there were *none* in daughter #1's cap, and just 2 or 3 in daughter #2's (she's had the worst of it, so just 2 or 3 is a minor miracle). So we're getting there, I do believe.

As far as I go...I'm still trying to fight off the remnants of being sick last time; what I posted last time was the beginning of a week's worth of being down sick with the flu. Currently I just have some leftover congestion in my head and chest, resulting in a stuffy nose and a slight cough that is *much* better than the coughing I started with. So that's also "getting there."

Writing has come in fits and spurts and I really need a braincell or two to cooperate with me. lol Currently I have some SGA Season 1 DVD's in the player to try to coax such cooperation from the grey matter. :)

I hope everybody's having a decent weekend; mine is likely to be fairly quiet with the exception of bug-fighting and a trip to the grocery store. ;)

And that's the way it is in my corner of the world.

Difficulties Abound

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 10:04 AM
Okay, so "Fringe" just barely scrapes by in terms of the actual science in its science fiction. That's okay because I'm there for the characters. If you can't have one, at least provide the other.

So last night's SGU gave me this:

--The ship's Great Thinkers brought on water that wasn't checked for microbial contamination? Makes me wonder what else slipped their notice. I mean, when astronauts finally get to our moon to retrieve some of the water just located there, do you think they're going to drink the stuff on the long trip home?

(And, apropos of that, OMG!!! What if moon water has alien microorganisms in it and they break out and take over the world? OMF, FG!!)

--I heard at least two lines recycled from other Stargate episodes. But they were really good lines.

--And Chloe dies a couple of times, so how's that for wish fulfillment? Not every female character can be/should be strong but after last week's protracted bar scene? Don't waste my time.

--[info]aslowhite asks the prescient question: So what do the nasty planet creatures eat when humans aren't around? My own question is, why did the nasty planet creatures attack the humans? They didn't seem to eat them. It's more like they were having fun ripping them open. Perhaps the creatures felt threatened?

I am completly new to the FAM method. I have been told to spend a good 6 months just charting my periods before I actually "start" but I really need a good resource. I understand most of it, but I don't have the money to spend on the book. What are good websites?

There are times that I wish an author would announce to the world who his/her favorite characters are. Mind you, I don't actually want authors to put in the warnings or make a side note listing the characters from most liked to least liked or anything. Most authors are pretty good about letting you know who the story is going to be focused on via the summary. But I'm a one character kind of gal, in that - for me - there is only one character above all who I really, really, really adore. Yes, I like the other characters, but not as much as that one character. So when I read a story by a new author or an author I've never read before - with no indication of who that author's favorite is - it's frustrating to sit through an entire tale in which my favorite character was all but shoved to the background.

Or worse, reading a story in which my favorite character was the author's least favorite.

20 Random Icons

I've been going crazy making icons lately. I don't claim to be good at making them, but thought I'd share anyways. 20 random ones in this batch. Probably more to come...depending on how long the muse lasts.
